Locating in the center of the Caucasus, Yerevan is the important transportation hub in the region. To solve the problems of air connection the city has two airports Zvartnots and Erebuni. Both of them regularly perform many flights, but Erebuni is mostly used for military purposes and is used as the base of the Russian Air Force, consisting of 18 MiG-29 fighters also.

Zvartnots airport is used only for civil aviation, and it is the main airport in Armenia. It was built in 1980, has an international status and can receive airplanes of any type. The airport is located 12 km west of Yerevan and has well-established motor traffic with the city.

In 2002, the Government of Armenia signed a contract with “Aeropuertos Argentina 2000”, the Argentine company, for a 30-year rent of Zvartnots airport. Airport takes complete modernization to meet with international standards. A new terminal with shops, restaurants, bars, waiting areas, etc was built in 2004-2007.

Today the work on putting into operation of new terminal to 2011 year is under process. The airport's capacity will be doubled and the total passenger traffic will reach 3 million people per year.

Airport Zvartnots is one of the largest airports in the Caucasus today. By the way, the world's largest aircraft An-225 “Mriya”, which set a world’s record for the transportation of mono cargo landed here in 2009. The aircraft with a cargo weighing 187 tons - a huge generator from Frankfurt landed on the runway of Zvartnots airport. So, passengers arriving at this airport in Yerevan can be calm: Zvartnots is ready for heavy loads.
